I took a life-changing songwriting class with Brian Eno this January.
One assignment? Write a protest song.
My result? Total failure… at least on paper.
What came out instead was Zombie Lover — a weird, gritty track about doom-scrolling, brain fog, and the slow zombification of our screen-obsessed culture.
I ran my drums through a mess of guitar pedals, dialed in a synth that sounds like a rotting circuit board, and sent it to my friend Greg Hoy to shred some guitars on it. Then I took the mess to Jonathan Plum, who helped me shape the mayhem into something you could actually press play on.
It’s raw, it’s noisy, and definitely not on brand… which might be why I love it.
Here’s the streaming link if you’re curious (or if you’ve ever felt like your phone might be turning you into the undead):
You can also stream it on Disco if you like: https://s.disco.ac/khhcmfyhkxeh
I might release it someday but don't feel like it fits.
And yet, Brian Eno would say, ship it anyway!
Here’s the lyrics:
Zombie Lover
They say I’ve got a weird imagination
Well, Someone’s in my house!
I’m talking about the state of contagion
And what’s allowed
What’s allowed?
I see the flesh
It hangs in my house
The glass is lit
no getting out
I see today's rabid polarization
And now someone’s in my house
I’m talking about the blind indoctrination
The lies and cat and mouse
I don’t know why I got here
I don’t know how I came at all
All I know is I’m sleeping with a zombie
And I know he’s gonna be my downfall
Ohhh so low
Ohhh so low
I’m talking about the state of conflation
We’ve lost our ideals
I wish it was my mad imagination
Talking about the state of the lie
I’m sleeping with a zombie
He’s got crazy ideas
Last Night I scrolled the TV
My eyes were glued with tears
Ohhh no more
Ohhh so low
I slept with a zombie last night
I slept with a zombie last night
I slept with a zombie last night
I slept with a zombie last night
Nice stuff, Dave. Always appreciate you sharing your songs, but this one struck a chord (pardon the pun) as I'm reading Jonathan Haidt's "Anxious Generation"...
A song for our times.🧟♀️ Lucky you, workshopping with Eno.
